Digital Publications Editor

Experience:

- 3+ Copyediting experience.

- 3+ years of Online Publishing.

- Geoscience writing/editing experience

- Project Management Experience to include:

- Developing RFPs.

- Soliciting and evaluating proposals from vendors.

- Developing workflows.

- 2+ years of writing/editing for a newspaper, magazine, newsletter, or website.

- Microsoft Office.

Education:

- A bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field.

FAO Publishing Job Opportunities

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is a major scientific and technical publisher, producing 200 print titles and many more web-based products each year, in up to six official languages.

The Publishing Policy and Support Branch, located in the Office of Knowledge Exchange, Research and Extension, is a small team responsible for ensuring that FAO’s technical units have access to the standards, tools and capacity necessary for producing and marketing information products effectively. The team offers the following services in support of FAO’s decentralized publishing process:

Provision of policies, standards, guidelines, tools and direct advice
Marketing and sales of information products
Management of FAO’s intellectual property, including rights and permissions
Management of copublishing arrangements with external publishers.

Within the next year, the Publishing Policy and Support Branch will be filling the following professional posts at FAO headquarters in Rome:

Publishing Manager (Grade: P-4) – One of the main duties of this position will be to coordinate the development and use of procedures, standards and guidelines as well as associated publishing tools. Prerequisite: 7 years of publishing management experience in academic, scientific, institutional or technical publishing, with high-level planning and communication skills. (FAO VA 2361 – OEK)

Publishing Officer (Grade: P-3) – This position will contribute to the development and use of procedures, standards and guidelines and play a lead role in the development and maintenance of a publishing services roster. Prerequisite: 5 years of relevant experience. (FAO VA 2364)

Publishing Officer (Marketing) (Grade: P-3) – This position will lead support to marketing and sales activities, including the development of new marketing and distribution platforms, and manage official distribution to member countries, Prerequisite: 5 years of relevant experience. (FAO VA 2363)

Publishing Officer (Graphic design) (Grade: P-3) – This position will have a key role in the development of corporate visual standards and guidelines for FAO scientific and technical information products as well as leading the testing and adoption of new publishing technologies. Prerequisite: 5 years of experience in cross-media design for scientific and technical products. (FAO VA 2362)

Publishing Officer (Rights) (Grade: P-2). In addition to rights, permissions and copublishing activities, this post will contribute to other advisory services provided by the team. Prerequisite: 3 years of relevant experience. (FAO VA 2365)

We have set the dates and location for the 2010 Annual Meeting! This year’s meeting will be held in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada from September 20 to 23, 2010. Our conference center will be at the Inn at Laurel Point. After visiting a significant number of hotels in Victoria, the Inn at Laurel Point blew me away with their views, their beautiful facilities and location, their wonderful food, and their generous hospitality. I hope you will enjoy the Inn at Laurel Point as well!

As some of you might have qualms about a conference in Canada at the end of September, I can assure you that Victoria boasts some of the mildest weather in Canada. In this post, you can see the blooming cherry blossoms on one of the local streets — and this photo was taken mid-February during the Olympics!

We’re still in the preliminary planning stages of the meeting, but we have some exciting ideas! The board would like to hear from you: what would you like to see at the meeting?

Candidates Needed for 2011 Board

AESE is seeking nominations for the following positions on the 2011 Board of Directors:

Vice-president
Treasurer
Secretary
Member at-large

All positions are three-year commitments. The Vice President will serve as VP in 2011, President in 2012, and Past-President in 2013. The Treasurer and Secretary can serve for an additional three-year term at the discretion of the board.

AGI requires input: National Water Vision

As a member society, the AESE has been asked for input on AGI and the American Water Resources’ discussion on if the US should develop a national water vision.

They have resources available, such as a conference series (http://www.awra.org/meetings/conference_series/policy_dialogue.html), member society webinars (http://www.agiweb.org/members/webinars/index.html), and an article about the National Water Vision (http://awramedia.org/vision/).

Update on the Google Books settlement

Facing a chorus of opposition from groups such as the U.S. Justice Department, the parties to the Google Books settlement have asked the court for more time to rework the proposed agreement. The revised settlement that emerges is likely to differ in some substantial ways from the earlier one, thus the July 27 post on the subject is probably obsolete. Nevertheless, we encourage AESE members to pay close attention to future developments to ensure their rights are protected.
