The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is a major scientific and technical publisher, producing 200 print titles and many more web-based products each year, in up to six official languages.
The Publishing Policy and Support Branch, located in the Office of Knowledge Exchange, Research and Extension, is a small team responsible for ensuring that FAO’s technical units have access to the standards, tools and capacity necessary for producing and marketing information products effectively. The team offers the following services in support of FAO’s decentralized publishing process:
- Provision of policies, standards, guidelines, tools and direct advice
- Marketing and sales of information products
- Management of FAO’s intellectual property, including rights and permissions
- Management of copublishing arrangements with external publishers.
Within the next year, the Publishing Policy and Support Branch will be filling the following professional posts at FAO headquarters in Rome:
Publishing Manager (Grade: P-4) – One of the main duties of this position will be to coordinate the development and use of procedures, standards and guidelines as well as associated publishing tools. Prerequisite: 7 years of publishing management experience in academic, scientific, institutional or technical publishing, with high-level planning and communication skills. (FAO VA 2361 – OEK)
Publishing Officer (Grade: P-3) – This position will contribute to the development and use of procedures, standards and guidelines and play a lead role in the development and maintenance of a publishing services roster. Prerequisite: 5 years of relevant experience. (FAO VA 2364)
Publishing Officer (Marketing) (Grade: P-3) – This position will lead support to marketing and sales activities, including the development of new marketing and distribution platforms, and manage official distribution to member countries, Prerequisite: 5 years of relevant experience. (FAO VA 2363)
Publishing Officer (Graphic design) (Grade: P-3) – This position will have a key role in the development of corporate visual standards and guidelines for FAO scientific and technical information products as well as leading the testing and adoption of new publishing technologies. Prerequisite: 5 years of experience in cross-media design for scientific and technical products. (FAO VA 2362)
Publishing Officer (Rights) (Grade: P-2). In addition to rights, permissions and copublishing activities, this post will contribute to other advisory services provided by the team. Prerequisite: 3 years of relevant experience. (FAO VA 2365)
